The best possible way to get up close and encounter various Flora and Fauna species is to enter the forest on foot. These are self-guided trails, please consult the map provided at reception if need be. Within the forest you might be lucky enough to spot the Karkloof Blue Butterfly (Orachrysops ariadne), crowned eagle and the dwarf chameleon. This Retreat forest is also home to the duiker, monkeys and many bird species such as the Narina Trogon and the sub-species of the crested guinea fowl. This beautiful sight is not only open to the guest from the lodge but also to day visitors. Some parts of trails are steep but may be attempted by a moderately fit person.

With three fully stocked dams to choose from, Rainbow Retreat promises a relaxed adventure in the fishing game. Using the ‘catch and throw’ policy of this establishment, all anglers are expected to abide by. Bring your own fishing tackle or hire our tackle, rod and supplies.

The clear blue pool located close to the dam allows for a relaxing swim and down time. Kids enjoy the waterfall feature while splashing in the sun. Adults can enjoy sipping on signature mocktails while soaking in the warm sunlight. Curling up with a book on the sun loungers around the pool or sundowners as the sky changes colour in the afternoon is an excellent idea.

Sharpen your tennis skills and challenge your hand eye-hand coordination on a game of tennis. Tennis rackets and tennis balls can be hired at reception.

The Karkloof area grows as the prime mountain biking area, with worldwide recognition of various races held in the area. With the trail opened to guests and visitors from the Rainbow Retreat, the forest shows off a truly amazing landscape.

Options to canoe across the dams are available*. This multi-man open boat enables you to make your way to the centre of the dam to fish or just enjoy the paddle across the sparkling water.

What an extraordinary way to destress from life's hassles while watching about the animals that fly by all the time. With such a wide array of species that are found within a short range, bird watchers can use this opportunity for sightings. Ranging from endangered species to colourful feathers are just a few of the specials one can anticipate seeing. The ambiance of the forest and greenery displays itself as a bird watchers haven. Guests are encouraged to take some time out to enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside as they watch these fascinating bird species in their natural habitats. These also make for excellent spots from which to take stunning photographs. If you spot any bird on the bird watch list (or any other), let us know and we will add your name on the list. All we need is at least three pictures for verification.

There are a few game that roam freely within the retreat. Some mornings or even at night you may see bushbuck (nkonka) grazing around the lodge. These timid animals can be found throughout the forest and spotted through the hiking trails. Mornings visits from the Gregarious samango monkeys and blue duiker (impithi) are likely to be noticed.

Under construction, will be available in January 2017.
